Modulation and voltage balancing control of dual five-level ANPC inverter for ship electric propulsion systems

Open-end winding motors are used extensively in ship electric propulsion systems, which medium-voltage high-power inverters a critical component. To increase the system voltage and power density, dual five-level active neutral-point clamped (ANPC) inverter is proposed herein to drive open-end for propulsion. Each phase of this comprises two ANPC bridges all phases powered by common direct-current link. A hybrid modulation method control inverter. The series-connected switches operated at fundamental frequency, other controlled with phase-shifted pulse-width (PWM), can achieve natural balance between flying capacitor voltages carrier period. closed-loop balancing based on adjusting duty ratios PWM signals proposed. be independently balanced without affecting output voltage. Simulation experimental results presented demonstrate validity method.
